The listed Jacobean exterior exudes grandness, but inside Fanhams Hall, relaxed comfort and modern style are combined with a great sense of fun. A versatile portfolio of spaces runs from the Great Hall, with its minstrels’ gallery and open fireplace – perfect for medieval banquets – to the modern lakeside Pavilion. A rolling refurbishment programme ensures that bedrooms – half of which were revamped in 2010 – and meeting facilities, with video conferencing, are kept up to date. In the 27-acre grounds, there’s a delightful Japanese garden with waterfalls and an ornamental tea house, newly restored as a wedding venue. Event add-ons include a visit from the hotel’s own ice-cream van or use of the latest addition, the 23-capacity Karaoke Klub, which features new lighting and lasers, plus a 52-inch interactive TV. Location, 18 miles from Stansted and only 28 miles from central London, is another plus.
