Originally intended as a country retreat when it was built in 1840, Norton House feels much further away than a 20-minute drive from the centre of Edinburgh. Unlike hotels in the busy city, this four-star property can afford to spread out, occupying 55-acre grounds with space for one of the area’s top spas, which houses seven treatment rooms, an Arabian-style steam room or rasul, a gym, indoor pools, plus a sauna and steam room. A refurbishment in 2008 added 35 extra bedrooms as well as a conference centre within the Walled Garden. For larger events, the Ballroom holds up to 300 for a conference and the adjacent Oak Room can be used as a breakout space or for drinks receptions. Other highlights include Ushers fine-dining restaurant (the highest rated in the Hand Picked Hotels group’s collection) and the modern Brasserie and Conservatory Lounge. Edinburgh Airport is 10 minutes away.
