The five-star Marriott Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club first made its name as the original country retreat for Londoners, thanks to its setting among 200 acres of Hertfordshire countryside an hour from the capital. The stately Jacobean property has 161 comfortable bedrooms and 14 flexible meeting rooms, many of which have retained their open fireplaces and elegant period features. The largest space is the striking 120-capacity Poles Hall, originally a convent chapel, which lends itself to lavish entertaining. Among the resort’s strong points are its extensive leisure facilities, which include a health club, spa, and tennis courts, plus an 18-hole PGA championship golf course that has played host to the English Open.
