The history of Buxted Park Hotel (part of Hand Picked Hotels) is as colourful as it is long, hosting luminaries as diverse as Winston Churchill and Marlon Brando. Built in 1722, it’s a venue that has always made the most of its assets, including 312 acres of grounds (taking in three lakes, a deer park and a walled garden) and a location near the beautiful Ashdown Forest. The interiors are similarly appealing. Of the 44 bedrooms, the spacious suites stand out in particular, boasting four-poster beds and original features such as open fireplaces. For events, the Ballroom is a suitably stately affair, with full-length windows and striking chandeliers. The Oriental Drawing Room has sweeping views of the estate, while the large library and 55-seater screening room are also worth knowing. Start an evening with cocktails in the Coat of Arms Lounge and Crystal Bar before a modern British dinner in the Dining Room.
