Chester’s history can be traced back to the 1st century A.D., when it was a formidable fortress guarding the northwest entrance to England. You can still see the Roman influence around the city, including in Chester’s mostly intact city walls, which are the most complete in Britain. The city feels rich in both history and beauty as you walk around it, with an ancient Roman amphitheatre and medieval half timbered buildings dotted around the streets. Walking through the city centre, if you’re doing a spot of shopping, you’ll notice the two tiered rows – which are covered galleries that can be traced back over 800 years. There’s plenty to do in Chester, whether you fancy a trip to the zoo with the whole family, want to indulge in a delicious meal before heading to a cosy pub, or stay in a fancy hotel, the world is your oyster in this beautiful city.
