We went on on a midweek Oct evening and were disappointed. On the menu the mains overlapped with the starters, and the starters overlapped with the side dishes. Result: little choice. There was a heavy fish bias, which is fair enough, but the big meat dish (and the most expensive item) was… steak. Still, the prices raised my gourmet expectations…
The beef carpaccio starter was nice (the rocket was tasty and crisp, the parmesan on top tangy). But the main course, smoked haddock fishcake, disappointed: a couple of bland fishy croquettes with a veggie sauce that did nothing. For the same money in the West End I expect, and get, tasty, thoughtful, top table meals. The dessert menu had nothing that appealed, so we passed on that.
My companion liked her second-choice wine (Rioja was off because blah blah), so I will let that stand. But judging by the bright yellow acid fizz I was served, they know nothing about beer. I left most of a glass.
The ceilings are high, the furniture hard and square, so every clank of cutlery echoed; and with the music so loud we had to lean in to hear what was said. The air con breezed about us, and the big windows on to the street meant every passer-by could gawp in. No sense of intimacy. All in all, more of a caff, than a restaurant.
