I was super excited by the prospect of dining at Tom's Kitchen in Canary Wharf yesterday but the whole experience turned out to be just average.
The Restaurant was almost empty when myself and my guest arrived. We received a warm welcome and were quickly seated in a window seat which was a little draughty due to the inclement weather in addition we were positioned immediately behind a larger group who were particularly loud, I thought this a little odd given that the place was empty.
I plumped for the haddock fishcakes and a side of “triple fried” chips. When they arrived the fishcakes looked nice enough but taste wise they were fairly bland. My fellow diner ordered fish and chips. I noticed immediately that both servings of chips were identical, a little pale and somewhat firm in the middle. I must admit I was expecting the chips to be golden brown with a crispy shell and fluffy potato inside, (disappointed face), I asked the waiter to confirm that they were triple fried to which he replied “yes madam all our chips are triple fried”. I think on this occasion I would have fried them a fourth or even a fifth time!
Feeling somewhat deflated I asked to see the dessert menu and my interest peaked when I read about the pear and blackberry crumble which was served with almond ice cream… wow! I just had to try it!
Dessert arrived and again it was average, the crumble topping was pretty chunky almost resembling broken biscuits, the pear and blackberry filling was fairly insipid, not the sweet juicy tangy filling that I expected. The blackberries were few and far between and the dessertspoon full of almond ice cream left no lasting memory on my palate.
The bill arrived and at £70 for two, I wish I had gone to the Ivy!
