Arguably the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. There were many reasons this restaurant was horrible, however, if you don’t have time to read them all and want a pithy review, the following example sums up my experience.
45 minutes after ordering two Full English breakfasts on a quiet Sunday, the waiter revealed they still hadn’t made our food because they chef wasn’t able to fry the eggs. Apparently they were ‘too warm’…!
Hopefully this is enough to make you realise that this restaurant is an inept attempt at a business, however, if you want more examples, please continue reading.
The waiters are awful
I ordered one tea (Lapsang Souchong) and was given a different tea – fine if it was a mistake. Except, the other waiter then revealed that they had actually run out of my chosen tea the day before. The first waiter should have told me that, not insulted my sense of taste by giving me a different tea altogether.
They did not have the ingredients
A small, but nonetheless important, detail. 10 minutes after our order, we saw a waiter being sent out and returning with a box of eggs – surely a key ingredient in any restaurant. What’s more, the restaurant claims on its website to have “searched all over the UK to find what we think are the best farmers and suppliers who allow us to provide quality and value for money.” I find it somewhat difficult to believe that the best eggs from all over the UK are found in the corner shop next door.
The chefs are awful
Despite not eating the food, I can guarantee you the chefs are awful. On ordering our breakfasts, the waiters notified us that poached eggs were off the menu, however fried and scrambled were still on. More curious than annoyed, we realised it was because the chef wasn’t capable of cooking a poached egg. What?! Perhaps it wasn’t surprising they struggled cooking fried eggs too.
Everything was just awful
On being told that, after 45 minutes on a quiet Sunday, our standard breakfast was still not ready, we thought it was entirely appropriate to leave. We didn’t shout, we stood up and said that this was not good enough, especially when they charge £3 a pot of tea and £9.95 for a Full English. Despite our grievances we didn’t get one apology; not when they brought the wrong tea, not when we asked where the food is and not as we walked out the door.
Don’t go to this restaurant. Pay a bit less and go to your local pub or greasy spoon. Pay a tiny bit more and get the Hawksmoor breakfast (I’ve heard it’s great). Hell, if you want consistency, you always know McDonalds can do a fried egg.
Just don’t go to this pretentious, overpriced, awful awful restaurant.
