The Five Fields has only just opened so as one of the first diners you never know if this is going to be a good thing or not!
It is a small restaurant with a very nice intimate feeling about it. We were a group of four and we were able to have a conversation over the table, which was not too big, but with a nice buzz in the background. I loved the leather chairs!
The food – was amazing. It is a small menu but I literally could have chosen 99% of the dishes listed. We were given three tiny canapes to start followed by an amuse bouche and then the starter that we had chosen. I went for the bloody mary oyster tartare. This came in two sections – the first was hot and the second cold but basically four tiny little individual sea food dishes. It is difficult to describe but each dish was beautifully presented and excellent flavours. Other dishes at the table were two amazing foie gras platters (very embarrassingly we took photos!) and quail – all very good, apparently. For a main course I had Dover Sole and others at the table had venison, lamb and chicken. Again, all excellent, especially the chicken which was cooked in three different ways. Desserts – very unusual but equally delicious. I would describe the food as clever cooking but they must use good ingredients as it all tasted so nice too.
Gripes? None really except that perhaps the extra, complimentary, desert was a bit too much. I think it detracted from the dessert that I had chosen (rhubarb and custard – a modern version and nothing like rhubarb and custard that I have had before!) but then I wouldn't normally eat that much anyway.
The service – faultless.
Would I return? Like a shot! I think it is going to become very popular very soon and I am trying to find dates/excuses to re book!
