I dined at Pollen Street Social for the first time last week then not a week later found myself at Social Eating House for a meal with two friends for my birthday (my choice). I LOVED Pollen Street Social. I wanted to love this, and I did at the time, but the more I think about it the more uncomfortable I become.
In short, the experience was great thanks to good service and nice ambiance. My food was good (although lacks the ingenuity of Pollen Street) but my companions' food was less good. The macaroni and cheese was terrible. The steak uninspiring, chips undercooked. Overall it was a little hit and miss and when the bill came it was £70 a head. We didn't have three full courses (we shared one dessert between three and the macaroni was half the price of a meat main) and we had two bottles of house wine at £20 a bottle. We bumped it up by starting with a cocktail each, but at £9 they hardly break the bank.
Weirdly, I'd go again. There's definitely something about it, and I sense it has the ambition to sort itself out.
