We are huge fans of the Savoy and we took our elderly aunts there for the pre-theatre menu (they like to eat early). The Pre-theatre menu was three courses for £26, which is obviously very good value compared to the à la carte that we normally have, but I am afraid to say that it was disappointing. There was a choice of three starters (soup, terrine or a salad), three main courses (veggie pasta, Pithivier – steak pie, mussels), three desserts (eton mess, fruit salad or crème brulee).
The starters were fine, nothing special but fine, and the vithipier was apparently also ‘fine’. I am afraid that my mussels were poor. The ones on top were cold, lots of them were rubbery and quite a few shells had not opened which I won’t eat. Now of course ordering mussels will always be a bit of a risk but nevertheless I did not expect to have a problem at the Savoy. Under normal circumstances I would not have hesitated to return the mussels to the kitchen but I knew that this would embarrass our guests. The desserts were very nice and the service was excellent.
All in all, we had a nice evening (finished off with a drink in the Beaufort bar which was empty – one of the advantages of eating early!) but the food was definitely on the disappointing side.
