A superb lunch at Petrus , great food, great service and great value – suitable for both an occasion and a business meeting … and if you are like me and your preference is for a round table then you will like it here as all the tables are round.
DETAILS – A lovely welcome from the Maitre D but we decided to go straight to the table for our apperitif …the pre drink area was not particularly inviting … a little bit near the door , more like a waiting area and a little bit quiet being near the empty part of the restaurant – i particularly like an aperitif before going to the table and there are in fact very few restaurants that have a nice area for this…
I had brought my friend for his birthday lunch and need not have worried about getting a good table as it seemed to me there were no bad tables … it is a very well designed room .. while a quite large room it has the appearance of being in sections so—- as when i was there it was about a third full ..it didn't impact . however i would have liked a little more buzz as it was a little quiet… not sure what to say about the room itself .. it is beige with a luxurious carpet but is just missing something in terms of atmosphere that i can't put my finger on it … I do agree with a previous reviewer who said most diners seemed to be out for a “posh” lunch and not regulars or business groups … I think with the value service food this will change …
To the food … we choose the Perfect Match menu which is a special for February and incredible value … a mini tasting menu with wines ( £50) so all decision making handed over .. great wines with great dishes ( flavours still memorable) and quite generous portions .. with separate side dishes of vegatables served in little pots ..( the lunch menu is £24/£29 )
The service was superb . it was generous, warm , humourous but yet professional and really made an effort to add to the experience from the minute we walked in to leaving … The only part of the tasting menu I thought was under par was the dessett which is surprising as Petrus obviously has one of the best pastry chefs in london .. as a really lovely gesture the chef sent out the signature dessert with his compliments .. (a chocolate bomb . a chocolate cover melted with chocolate sauce to reveal icecream and honeycomb) . which I can still taste and will be returning to Petrus quite simply to order this dish again … and then as a birthday plate for my friend a portion of their creme caramel .which literally melted in the mouth … God I am so glad we tasted these dishes as they were without doubt best desserts I ever had .. even in Paris … but the entire meal was superb and the wines chosen by the sommellier were literally perfect so we left with a great sense of satisfaction .
The bill was £130 including two apertif and service charge .. ( if we had gone for the 3 course lunch menu it would have been even cheaper ) you won't do better for the quality of food … it just received its first star and I can see it getting a second one soon …
