Our view of a typical Italian restaurant is a cosy osteria with black and white family pictures on the wall and a large pepper grinder on the hip of each waiter.
Of course, this could not be further from the style of the top restaurants in Milan and Rome which aim for slick, metallic and modern and avoid any connotation of stereotypical gemuetlichkeit.
Accordingly, it is fair to say that L'Anima is a genuinely authentic Italian restaurant in London. Plate glass windows, white leather and stainless steel are the key design elements. A piano singer in the corner of the bar the only nod to something more relaxed.
That is not to say that the place is uncomfortable or that it lacks ambience, not at all. I was very relaxed as I sat reading my book at the bar with a negroni while waiting for my friend to arrive. I had looked at the wine list in advance and decided to bring my own bottle – a 2007 Vajra Barolo – which the waiter sensibly offered to decant for me (corkage £25).
My friend finally arrived and we moved to the table – service was attentive and friendly but not fussy.
The food was excellent. Fettuccine with wild mushrooms and black truffles was true to its ingredients with clean and well-delineated flavours and a good balance of ingredients. As a main I had a smoked aubergine dish which involved a variety of ornaments including half a boiled egg, cheese and some light vegetable touches. Finally the souffle with chocolate ice cream and berry sauce was expertly prepared, light in flavour (though perhaps a touch too dense and heavy in texture) and had a nice complexity.
Ultimately, nothing really blew me away but everything was so well done with care, attention to detail and quality of ingredients that I left incredibly satisfied. What more can one ask for?
