Trying to book the restaurant in the first place was an issue, web site booking not working so called, held in queue after 40 mins before i gave up. Managed to book thru squaremeal (although confirmation of boking came thru after we had eaten). We arrived at 12.45 for booking at 1pm as client not arrived we decided to have a drink in the bar. The girl on reception reminded me that we would need to leave table by 3pm. Arriving at a restaurant and being told when to leave isn't that welcoming, I was aware we had to leave by 3 as it was made clear on booking web site, but hey thanks for saying. We went to the bar and ordered 2 beers and a G&T. My colleague went to the bar as there were small shot glass's of cashews and almonds which he brought back to the table, followed by an irate waitress who said they were only for people who ordered cocktails only. Considering the money we were about to spend that seemed pretty petty and I thought a G&T was a cocktail anyway? The girl from reception appeared at 1pm, said our table is ready and again reminded us she would want it back at 3…getting a bit annoying, as we hadn't forgotten in 15 mins. Client arrived at 1.05 followed by reception girl, client wanted to join us in a quick drink at the bar, reception girl said, “but you have to leave your table by 3”. Ok, now thats become officially annoying and now embarrassing to our client who said, no I will have a drink in bar only to be told, “you can have them at your table”! With al this fuss over table turning, we were expecting restaurant to be packed, far from it, half the restaurant was actually closed. Sat down at 1.15 on chairs that are the most uncomfortable I have ever sat on, no cushion just a wooden seat, so there was no danger of us staying at the table past our allotted 2 hrs, (which we were again reminded of as we sat).
We order the tasting menu, at £68 it seemed reasonable for the expensive ingredients, dover sole, crab, razor clams etc. Starters arrived, one was a bowl of shredded chicken salad, which I didn't see on menu. When I asked, I was told it was the replacement for the razor clams as they were out of season…would have been nice to have been told that at time of ordering? Chicken is an odd replacement for clams but what made matters worse was the salad was unbelievably salty. The rest of the food was pretty standard fare spring rolls etc but the two stand out dishes were the Dover sole and soft shell crab, both outstanding, service was ok.
Now the magic hour of 3 pm arrived, I looked around restaurant and we were the only ones there, no queues of people pushing to get in, no waiters frantically relaying tables, empty. So what was the 3pm curfew all about, surely the staff should be allowed to go off script and not explain the 2hr rule multiple times when days are that quite?
With the bill topping £650 for 4 and an experience sadly not living up to that, my Boss asked to see the General Manager to explain personally. No General Manager, he had gone, so he explained to the Sommelier who promised GM will call in the morning. We have tried to do the right thing and explain in person, but to date, no call. Sadly the restaurant and food as a whole doesn't live upto the view, go elsewhere.
