Hawksmoor Air St. is the latest branch of the hugely popular, swanky steak hangouts, but the advantage is they do seafood. This is proper fancy seafood equalling the might of the steak. There is a good sized bar to kick the night off, large enough to find a table and buzzy enough to be intimate. The main restaurant area is a never-ending, longitudinal, art-deco, dining hall (a bit like a panoramic photo). The interior feels very much like a modern day 'gentleman's club' (more contemporary than the Atheneum), i.e. lots of wood panelling, hard wood parquet flooring, gilted mirrors and plush, jaguar-green, leather booths. Beware this place is Y chromosome heavy.
Now, the food in a word, sensational. I am not a huge steak person and I was only lured to this Hawksmoor branch with the promise of good seafood. Begin your feast with lightly battered, queenie scallops with tangy, lush tartar sauce (first for me). Then the big decision, seafood or steak or be diplomatic and get both between two, which worked a treat (no food envy). Posh surf and turf, if you like. Steaks were huge, chargrilled to perfection and sliced like a cake. Then, condiment heaven, anchovy hollandaise (how those little fishes induce such flavour never ceases to amaze me) and bone marrow gravy (packed with robust meaty flavours). Final hurdle was the dessert, all yummy, capped off with the salty caramel rolos, the perfect end to the perfect feast. PS I would advise loose fitting clothes and a large wallet for this mighty meal.
