Well what a disappointment. I took some friends last night to the Grand Imperial as it was Chinese New Year. We had had drinks at the bar the week before and it certainly looked like it had promise. Unfortunately there were no celebrations to talk of except a very expensive New Year cocktail and there was absolutely no atmosphere in this very large space. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet. We all selected a Chef's recommended menu three at £40 and one at £35. The food was just okay the dim sum was tasty but two pieces was ridiculous as was the portion of duck that came with it, the large prawn was also disappointing lacking flavour, the spinach soup with scallop was nice but just one scallop! And the noodles with mushrooms were well noodles with mushrooms but hardly a fine dining experience. The Creme Brulee with Geen Tea was the surprise of the evening, absolutely delightful. The service was also very disappointing in one instance three of us had been served our middle course and we had to wait at least five minutes for the final dish to arrive. At these prices this is poor service. Also the food could have been hotter. The overall service was very patchy and not up to the standard I would expect from a restaurant that is clearly pitching itself at the higher end of the market. I really do think this restaurant will struggle unless it get's its act together. The final bill for four was just under £300 with three bottles of wine at sub £30.00. For the overall experience this was too much money and I thought the set menus that we chose were terrible value. Hakkasan has nothing to fear in fact with Hakkasan opening in Mayfair the Grand Imperial will have to up its game as this restaurant is large and will need a great reputation to fill it! PW
