Used to go to the previous incarnation of Searcys pre theatre and it was always geared up for theatre goers; efficient, friendly service, reasonable food. The Gin Joint which as taken its place looks good, comfortable and contemporary but was very disappointing.
We arrived before 6pm – play was starting at 7.15 – we eventually ordered around 6.15 and ordered from the Pre Theatre menu thinking it would be quick. Reasonable menu with a meat, fish and vegetarian option. Starters which included beetroot cured salmon and smoked duck salad came after 15 minutes, with no bread having been offered. When we asked from some we were told it would take 5 minutes as it had to be heated up!!. The bread arrived after we had finished our first courses and was piping hot in a jar type container and was tasteless brittle white bead.
Main courses arrived at about 6.55. The Vegetarian beetroot falafel looked good and tasted OK, a little dry as just served with some salad but the portion was enormous, The pork shoulder was more successful, moist with good flavour. The fish, seabream fillet, was well cooked but tiny portion.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to try the desserts of have coffee. The Staff, though friendly enough didn't seen to realise that ‘pre theatre’ dinner meant we were pressed for time – Previously this had never been a problem and if the Gin Joint wants the pre theatre diners they should look to places like the Mezzanine at the National which works amazingly efficiently.
