Important recent changes at Cotto have included the appearance of chef Hans Schweitzer, sometime head chef of Midsummer House, Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados, and elsewhere, who has completely revitalised the kitchen. A light first course, a terrine say, might be followed by a superb boned, stuffed poussin with summer vegetables, or by wonderful rack of lamb, and then a prize crème brulée, or fruit tart, or superb homemade ices. But see the current Cotto website for full details of what's on offer. There is now also far greater smoothness and efficiency in the service, which ensures that the evening runs to perfection.
One minor current drawback is that dinner, great value at £35 for three courses, is served from 7pm on three nights only, Thursday to Saturday, although the place is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm for breakfast, snacks, lunch and tempting over-the-counter purchases. A recent phone-call at 9.30am found Schweitzer in the middle of cooking smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for lucky breakfast customers!
The ‘new’ Cotto is a terrific addition to the expanding local restaurant scene, but remember to make your dinner booking in good time: the place is usually packed out, and deservedly so.
