Who doesn't love the idea of a cheaper Gaucho?! Concept-wise it is right up my street. Execution-wise I'm not quite so sure. I came here with an old school friend I hadn't seen in 20 years so truthfully our focus was not on the food. Atmosphere and decor-wise I found it a bit blinged-up 90s cross cheap man's Gaucho, with weird blue lighting on the upper floor; it's great to be somewhere in Cambridge where you don't end up whispering and which feels busy but it came close to feeling like dining in a club in Ibiza. We had a great table, slightly away from the hubbub thankfully, by the enormous front windows and this had the unexpected bonus of being near the door so we could pop out regularly for my friend to smoke a cheeky faaaag. Rewind 2 decades to being back behind the bike sheds (not me, of course, I was always a good girl). Service was great- our trusting waiter didn't look at all perturbed by our disappearing act and patiently served up more wine than was really wise. Chips, courgette tempura and chocolate dessert (not together obviously) were perfectly pleasant, but the meat should have been a showstopper; whilst my steak was OK in flavour I found it rather too chewy and that got in the way of catching up on our substantial backlog of gossip. Luckily the punchy Argentinian Malbec washed it all happily down and kept conversation flowing. I was pleasantly surprised that they offered a rather nice dessert wine too (naturally I cannot now remember what it was, thanks to fuzzy memory) but it was good enough to have a second glass each by which time guilty school confessions were being aired and I think we'd agreed that boys should never get in the way of friendship, advice which still stands. Lovely staff called a taxi for us and bundled us off into the night, a mere £45 worse off (great value for all the food and booze) but considerably worse off physically.
