I am extremely surprised by the ratings other diners have given as I think this is a solid performer (and certainly saying it is a poor “immitation” (sic) of something which it isn't even purporting to be seems very harsh).
I've just been here for lunch with the boyf. I had a steak sandwich which had beautiful quality, perfectly cooked meat (not dripping blood but pink juiciness); so much better than the dried out old boots which many gastro pubs pass off as steak ciabattas. And I loved the chunky cut chips served up in the quirky flowerpot. The boyf had a thick burger which tasted of real beef. Honey roasted root veg and green bean sides were delicious (although at £3.50 each, you'd hope so).
I've also had dinner here in a big group, many dinners a quatre, coffee with the girls etc and the venue has fitted every occasion well. Meat is the thing here so I agree you'd be best choosing from the grill. I've never had a problem with service which has always been friendly. I can see why people think it's not the cheapest and perhaps the cooking doesn't consistently deliver on the excitement which the butcher entrance and solid menu promise (but surely better to aim high and just miss than aim low?). Still, I think it's a good all rounder, a great alternative to the Prince Albert (although you can't bring your dog in here), and a solid choice in this area.
