We expect to experience a few hiccoughs when attending the opening day of a restaurant but would have expected Gordon Ramsay's famous “attention to detail” to prevail. So although we were given menus and water when we first arrived at the table, we waited a further 25 minutes before we ordered any wine and then a further 15 minutes before anybody took our order for food.
My husband had the burratta, heritage tomato and goats cheese and I had the tuna marinated in lemon and lime for starters; we spotted the burrata waiting on a tray for the tuna… which the waiter actually chased up from the raw bar, perhaps the hot dishes should follow the cold ones?! The starters were good although the tuna tasted as it if it had come straight out of the fridge.
Lots more faffing in bringing the wine to the table, and cutlery one piece at a time but then the mains arrived, and everything was forgotten! The veal chop was superb and the venison (cooked perfectly rare) was sublime accompanied by absolutely delightful green beans with hazlenut and lemon. We managed to share a dessert – pineapple carpaccio with orange sorbet which was sensational and finished off the meal with a wonderful Espresso Martini.
The decor was a little confusing and the chairs in the green section looked seriously uncomfortable although we were fortunate enough to be seated on a banquette.
The food was divine and good value but the service needs to be seriously improved to fulfil Bread Street Kitchen's full potential.
