We were looking forward to eating here prior to going to the theatre, and as it was a sunny evening I requested a table outside. Despite it being busy they found us a slot and were seated. Drinks were ordered and arrived quickly. We chose the pre theatre menu as the choices loooked good and it was reasonably priced- £14.95 for two courses.
It took ages to order. Our olives never arrived. There was no around to remind and the staff seemed to be disorganised. Three of us ordered the pea soup, which frankly was dreadful. It was hot, but very watery with hardly any taste. The bean salad looked like a can of beans over some lettuce. The main courses arrived quite uickly which was good, as we were in a bit of a rush. I had chosen the nicoise salad with mgrilled mackerel for an additional £1. It was literally the sparsest salad i have ever seen! It barely covered the white of the plate one single layer and was poorly presented, the mackerel was tough and pre coooked, no olives either- just a couple of soggy beans and chunks of potato. The salads at pret are much better!
At no point did our waitress come and check on us to see how the food was or if we needed more drinks. The fish dish looked good on the other hand and my colleagues said it was good. The beef was tough and loooked like a child's portion. It also took ages to pay as no one was around again. We had to practically stand up before we had the bill delivered (which was incorrect because of the olives!)
Shame the food was so disappointing as its a terrific spot and the atmosphere was good. Perhaps the al a carte menu is better, but pre theatre needs improving. Perhaps these service side can be put down to teething problems, but you couldnt use that as an excuse for poor quality food. A smile from the staff wouldn't go amiss either!
