I visited the Bangalore late August 2012, at around 7pm on a Wednesday. There was no-one upstairs to greet us, so we wandered down into a cavernous labyrinth below.
The music and the aircon were fierce, creating a deafening chill. The hard tables, hard floor and vorticist walls made it one of the City’s innumerable and indistinguishable concrete drinking holes, rather than a restaurant to relax in and enjoy the food.
We ordered the dosas. The presentation impressed: trendy square plates and the side vegetable (lentil) in its own pot, with clashing coloured sauces on the side. The dosa was enormous, over a foot long and overhanging the plate, and looked as tasty as a brandy snap.
But oh, dear. The chicken inside was hard, rubbery and tepid, and the flavours nowhere. Valiant chewing was required. We ordered a jug of beer, but that was watery and sour. Only the spiced lentils had any texture and taste to them.
I shan’t be going back.
