We had booked in for a breakfast at 9:30am, we arrived on time and were promptly shown to our seat, luckily we were able to get window seats so could admire the views.
The waiter came over and took our orders for drinks and then our breakfast. My partner ordered the Shard breakfast and asked to have poached eggs rather than fried eggs and I ordered the Aquashard smoked salmon.
Our drinks arrived after a small wait. During this time a few more patrons had started to trickle in, a couple came and sat on the table next to us and had their orders taken.
My partner and I were busy enjoying our cocktails, the view and each other’s company, when we noticed the couple next to us and other guest surrounding us (who had arrived after us) were tucking in to their breakfasts. We started to look around for the waiting staff but they all seemed to be busy fussing over other guests. We then noticed one of the waiters going over to another table with a Shard Breakfast (with poached eggs) and the Aquashard smoked salmon. The Shard Breakfast was accepted by this table and the smoked salmon was sent back. We called the waiter over to explain that he had given our breakfasts to the wrong table, the waiter dumped the smoked salmon on our table and hurried off to get another Shard Breakfast. We waited a while for this, during which time my eggs grew cold and the bread became soggy. Finally the waiter bought another breakfast over with the wrong eggs, which we pointed out. He took the plate back to get the correct eggs and the lemon I requested to accompany my salmon. By this time my whole breakfast was cold, but as we were having a special day together in London so decided to ignore this and try to enjoy the rest of the Shard dining experience.
We finished our breakfasts which were delicious despite being cold. As we had a whole day of activities planned in London we asked for the bill. My partner asked for some water to quench our thirst following the breakfast and cocktails. We were very disappointed to be served one half filled glass of tepid water. Slightly bemused by this my partner asked for some lemon, to our shock the waiter pointed to the left over lemon (from my breakfast) on the table and walked off.
The bill came and due to the service we had received we were slightly perturbed by the compulsory service charge added to the bottom. We would normally happily pay this but as we felt we had a complete lack of service, we questioned this with the waiter. The waiter explained this was compulsory and HAD to be paid. I am normally happy to pay service charge and will add extra if we have had exceptional service, but on this occasion I felt extremely disgruntled to pay this.
As we didn’t want to waste anymore of our day and cause a scene, we paid the bill and left.
