Applebee's Fish is a great place to drop by for either a quick bite or a long, lazy lunch. The quality of the produce is top notch and the chefs will be happy to cook something from the display counter at market price as the cafe doubles up as a fishmongers. The food is very seasonal and the menu changes often, with a couple of star performers that no doubt remain on the menu due to popular demand. I chose to have mackerel with chorizo and broad beans and a side of mixed leaf salad. The flavours married together beautifully and the mackerel fillets were divine. My side salad probably was a bit overpowered by the amount of fennel in it and left little to the imagination in the way of herbs. My two guests both enjoyed the fillet of cod in batter with chips and mushy peas. The fish was fresh and the batter had the perfect amount of crunch, all sat on a generous helping of chips. Delicious. The table next to us had a generous helping of breaded whitebait to share and food envy definitely got the better of us. Just my luck to be spotted drooling over someone else's food, to my surprise I ended up being offered the first pick of the whitebait leaving me feeling very grateful and also a little embarrassed…
Not overpriced, this little cafe in Borough Market offers some fantastic lunchtime and dinner offers making it all the more appealing as your purse is not doubt feeling a little lighter after wandering around the market stalls.
All in all, a fantastic little venue with an ever changing menu in a wonderful location. Will visit again.
