I am surprised this place needs so many offers to draw in the crowds what with the perfect location, impressive decor and food that speaks volumes. Nevertheless, I’m not one to turn down 50% off, so I tucked in. I started with the seared scallops, baby leeks, crispy black pudding and smoked bacon sauce. Just typing the words sets off every food craving in me. The flavours were intensely rich with the balance of a plump, perfectly cooked delicate scallop. In my head I was already imagining who I would tell about it. I’m known around the office as someone who does tend to go on about food discoveries and everyone was definitely going to hear about this one. I didn’t think the main could get much better but they served up a picture perfect venison wellington. I haven’t enjoyed a classic like this in a long time and I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. I was so full as I reached the last few bites but there was no way I was going to leave even a tiny bit of it. My boyfriend had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which I insisted I wouldn’t be able to share…until it came looking and smelling as sweet as the British creation should and I guiltily dived in.
On the drinks front we enjoyed a lovely bottle of red but made the mistake of ordering a disappointing whiskey pear sour. I love the regular whiskey sours but this was very bland and not enjoyable. I will let them off because they made me so so happy with the food and friendly service.
