Square Meal review of Water House:
On a Shoreditch towpath of the Regent's Canal, Water House, like its sibling Acorn House, takes ethical eating to new heights. The restaurant has roof-mounted solar panels to provide hot water (all of which is filtered on site), cooking is powered by renewable hydro-electricity & there's a wormery to digest food waste. The modern British cooking is assured & simple, letting fine ingredients – local & seasonal where possible – speak for themselves. Breakfast features eggs, bacon & black pudding, while the main menu includes charcuterie plates (cured shoulder of pork & Berkswell cheese, say) as well as heartier dishes such as duck confit with parmesan risotto, artichoke & thyme barigoule, & slow-roast lamb shoulder with mint & quince. Little things like breads, oils, & espresso are first-rate, & the wine list comes from top organic producers. Staff trained from the local community are polished yet warm & natural.
