It’s full-steam ahead at the White Star these days, with a stylish, upbeat refurbishment, as well as new, upmarket bedrooms above. The one-time seafarer’s hotel, set in the heart of Southampton’s marine district, now offers something for everyone. A series of lounges up front set the cosmopolitan tone, while both casual & more formal dining areas are set around the large, sweeping bar decked out in wood panelling, chandeliers & framed shipping photographs, The food sails a populist course: substantial mains include grilled lemon sole with parsley & anchovy butter, and there’s a separate bar menu (think pub classics such as sausages, mash & fine beans). Pavement alfresco seating for summer days, too.
