The Pigs is a partnership between local Norfolk restaurateur Richard Hughes (see entry for Lavender House, Brundall) & the owners of local hotspot cafe/bistro Byfords in nearby Holt. It proudly delivers native seasonal ingredients on a charmingly old-fashioned menu that is broken up into ‘Iffits’ – nibbles to go with drinks, perhaps homemade pork scratchings or Malton cheese in oil; ‘With Bread’ – maybe beef dripping on two rounds of toast with sea salt, or a freshly baked roll with Swannington Farm salt brisket. ‘Peckish’ delivers cock-a-leekie, corned beef hash pie, or potted shrimps with mace; ‘Hungry’ a substantial marmalade-glazed ham hock with cooking liquor, mushy peas & mustard mash, while ‘Pig Desserts’ include Horlicks rice pudding with stewed prunes, orange & Earl Grey tea. If the hearty food is not enough of a draw, staff are delightfully friendly too.
