Square Meal review of Highwayman:
Having already struck gold with their first gastropub, The Three Fishes at Mitton, the Northcote Manor team have repeated their success with their latest pub launch. More of a dining destination than a real local, the formula couldn’t be simpler. The clue comes in the arty black & white photos of local food producers that adorn the walls & place mats – quality north-west produce is the star here. Big, bold dishes include starters such as Peter Gott’s potted wild boar with slow-cooked onions, pork dripping & sourdough toast, followed perhaps by heather-reared Bowland lamb Lancashire hotpot with pickled red cabbage, while gently melted Shorrock’s Tasty Lancashire cheese on toast, topped with burnished strips of sweet-cure bacon & glistening with pools of Worcester sauce is the best comfort food in the region. And it’s all very good value for money, too.
