Square Meal review of Caldesi in Campagna:
Already home to two three-Michelin starred restaurants (The Fat Duck & The Waterside Inn) as well as top gastropub The Hinds Head, Bray has a refreshing new arrival. From the couple behind Marylebone’s much-loved Caldesi & Caffe Caldesi, this new restaurant may have a plush & modern look but at its heart is rustic Italian. The antipasto selection is reminiscent of Tuscan holidays: charred artichokes, cold cuts, & beautifully salty pecorino cheese; while a main course of tender, slow-cooked guinea fowl & chicken came with chunky vegetables and a burst of fresh herbs. But the real show-stopper was an intermediate course of lasagne, made with paper-thin pasta slices & a rich meaty sauce packed with porcini mushrooms. Admittedly, puddings of plum tart with mascarpone cream & doughnut sticks with jam & custard are pedestrian by comparison, but with affable service & a lovingly sourced all-Italian wine list, this is sure to become a village favourite.
