One of Edinburgh’s longest running Indian vegetarian restaurants, Anna Purna keeps on rolling – although the original owners have long retired, some of the old homeliness has gone & the decor has been smartened up. Service can also be rather patchy, but the location – close to the main University of Edinburgh campus – makes its worth knowing about, especially as you can eat here very economically. The menu continues to offer a fascinating choice, from elaborate starters such as sev poori (small crisp bites filled with potatoes, onion & coriander, served with chilli, coriander & tamarind sauces) to familiar curries (aloo gobi, sag paneer), assorted dhal dishes & specialities like kumbi masala (mushrooms in a creamy coconut sauce). Alternatively, sample a full selection on one of their thalis.
