Cowal is a sleepy peninsula reached only by driving via Loch Lomond & Arrochar, or the ferry from Gourock on the Firth of Clyde. Tucked away in the south of Cowal, overlooking the Isle of Bute, is the hamlet of Tighnabruaich – home of the old Royal Hotel. A recent transformation has made it the acclaimed venue it is today – rebranded An Lochan in 2006. Diners have the choice of a bistro space or something a little more formal. There is good venison, great shellfish, & a three-course meal might include marinated duck with Arran herbs to start; sea bass on samphire mash with Bloody Mary sauce as a main; panacotta with strawberry jelly & raspberry mousse for dessert. A brilliant getaway.
