Square Meal review of Ben Bowers:
Located in a handsome Victorian corner building, Ben Bowers has remained a landmark Nottingham restaurant since it opened in 1973. The extensive menu is mainly sturdy old-school comfort food along the lines of chicken liver pate with Cumberland preserve & warm toast, & fillet of English beef with local Colston Basset Stilton & port sauce. But there are lighter, more eclectic choices, too: Szechuan peppered duck breast, say, or tagliatelle with monkfish & tiger prawns in a green Thai spiced coconut cream sauce. The small ground-floor dining room (a larger basement space is used during busier times) still has its period charm & a pianist on Friday & Saturday nights completes the almost colonial ambience. Friendly & welcoming staff fit in with the old fashioned approach.
