Square Meal review of Albion Inn:
Bang in the heart of busy Chester, & yet tucked away down a quiet side street overlooking the impressive sandstone city walls, the Albion is known for its unusual pub interior. This is a showcase for landlord Mike Mercer’s impressive collection of First World War memorabilia – old photographs, enamelled advertising signs – displayed alongside William Morris wallpaper, a Victorian cast-iron tiled fireplace & a player piano. The kitchen turns out good-value, hearty ‘Trench Rations’ using locally sourced ingredients, perhaps local pork & herb sausages teamed with caramelized onions & creamed potatoes, & filled Staffordshire oatcakes (think pancake rather than biscuit) are a speciality. A curry is usually offered & vegetarians are catered for, but not children, who are firmly discouraged.
