Square Meal review of 80 Queen Street:
At the western extremity of Edinburgh’s New Town, 80 Queen Street has been a fixture on the city’s posh pub circuit for years. Formerly family-run, it was bought by the mammoth Punch Taverns in 2005. The food, however, is done by Devil’s Kitchen, a local firm that describes itself as a ‘boutique outside catering company’, & it’s pretty good. The menu has a page of open sandwiches & salads for those who don’t want to dwell, but you could also have something much more substantial. Starters include jumbo prawns, fishcake, or an unexpectedly good bruschetta (char-grilled vegetables & tomato salsa on focaccia, served stacked on a wooden board). Mains involve pasta (spinach gnocchi), burgers of decent provenance (beef, venison & lamb via local butcher George Bower), steak or seafood pies & more. Highly competent pub grub.
