The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a private members' club dedicated to single cask Scotch. The original is in Leith, but in 2004 they opened these premises in the New Town, including a ground-floor restaurant which throws its doors open to non-members for pre-theatre Monday-Saturday, plus all day Thursday (lunch, pre-theatre, dinner). The lunch menu could bring seared scallops with sweet parsnip puree, julienne apple, & caramel to start; then a seriously good sea bass fillet on green lentils with mussels & a saffron broth; simple lemon tart with neat marmalade ice-cream for dessert. Downside? One loud table in such a small space can make noise levels hard to bear. Upside? A standard of cooking that tempts you to join the Society so you could eat here whenever you wanted.
