Square Meal review of Castleton House Hotel:

A sturdy Edwardian country house down the road from the fairytale Glamis Castle, Castleton is a small hotel with its fair share of guests who come for the huntin’ & fishin’. That said, the conservatory restaurant is open to non-residents seeking an elevated standard of cooking. A typical dinner could start with an excellent goats’ cheese & potato tart. Then you might try Gressingham duck with chanterelles; pork with fennel relish & caramelised apples; or grilled sea bream in a herb crust, partnered with rich, moist potato covered in spinach & red onion marmalade. Vanilla parfait with braised Agen prunes makes a top-class dessert. House wines starting at £14 & an open fire in the cosy bar area complete a well-judged package from owners David & Verity Webster (also Raemoir House Hotel, see separate review).
