Square Meal Review of Montague Inn ?

This little Somerset gem is so hidden away in a twist of country lanes that you'll be glad you invested in that new sat nav. Inside is as simple as can be: one room for drinking regional ales from Bath Ales or Blindmans Brewery, & one for eating. This is how traditional pub food should always taste: sound culinary skills applied to lush ingredients from nearby farms – the quality is ‘stunning’. Menus change regularly according to what’s available but may well include salad of bacon, avocado, Exmoor Blue cheese & soft poached egg, a hearty plate of slow-cooked belly pork with a Parmesan crust, vine tomato & olive compote & aubergine tempura, & pecan, walnut & chocolate pastry for afters. Check the specials board for impressive fish dishes & daily changing pub classics.

    Travelling between London and Bodmin we found this delightful little pub; not far from the A303. With not much time on our hands but needing a break, we found this ‘gem’ efficient and extremely friendly. The bar was warm and cosy, and despite being full of obvious locals, the Landlord was very welcoming and helpful. There was even a biscuit for the dog. The menu was seasonal with a clear use of local produce. I had the homemade terrine which was delicious and full of flavour, but wished I'd gone for his confit of duck although the fish and chips looked amazing as did the open sandwiches. He was equally happy with the choice of local ales straight from the cask and my homemade orange and passion fruit drink more than made up for the fact I was driving. We had to tear ourselves away but we will be back.
