Square Meal review of Crab at Chieveley:
David Barnard has replicated his former pub, the Crab & Lobster in Asenby, North Yorkshire, right down to the eccentric nautical decor, bedrooms imitating famous hotel rooms around the world, & a menu devoted to seafood. Squeaky fresh fish is delivered daily from Cornwall & dishes such as the superb whole lemon sole served with grapes, sultanas & brown nut butter are typical of the kitchen’s simple approach. But take a more adventurous journey if you like with a Cornish crab cocktail coupled with wasabi mayonnaise to start & loch salmon teriyaki with saffron mash & wilted pak choy for main. The lunchtime set menu (£16.50 for two courses) runs to excellent crab & shrimp soup & pan-fried sea bream served with sweet potatoes & summer greens, while token meat dishes include rack of lamb, Gloucester Old Spot cutlet or veal cheeks. It’s perfect – ‘you just don’t want to leave’.
