The Horse and Trumpet

This discreet restaurant with rooms, set in a pleasantly renovated former pub, is one of the most accomplished acts in the area. Chef Gary Magnani produces dishes that surprise & delight. We tried the tasting menu matched with carefully selected wines from an enthusiastic list. It kicked off with a rich but dainty parmesan creme caramel with parmesan air, ahead of a superb crab salad with fennel biscuit & avocado cream. Mains included sweet & flaky halibut with a pumpkin puree & the contrasting flavours of crisp rice, little gem lettuce & curry, & herb-poached pork fillet with earthy spinach & tangy lemon & sage. A refreshing celery sorbet awakened the palate ahead of a light trio of desserts – coconut rice pudding, strawberry consomme, ginger & advocaat ice-cream. There was even space for a tiny piece of Colston Bassett Stilton with pear chutney & beautifully crafted petits fours with coffee.
