Square Meal review of Bordeaux Quay Restaurant:
Designed to have minimal impact on the environment, Barney Haughton’s latest venture boasts impeccable eco-warrior credentials, glammed up with elegant chairs, deep carpets & some truly stunning lighting. Add to that the floor-to-ceiling views over the river & you’ve got a restaurant with a real sense of occasion. The ethos is the same as at its sister restaurant, Quartier Vert: local organic ingredients given a classical European treatment. At its best this includes simple but impressive breads, a perfectly structured game terrine, & tender rump of lamb with lentils, buttery sprout tops & an assertive salsa verde. Poached monkfish with clams, leeks & white wine sounded dull yet was anything but: the fish imbued with the briny juices from the clams & served in a punchy white wine reduction. Puddings might include a custardy creme brulee, given a delicious cinder-toffee edge by a dark caramel top, or soft meringue with apple & poached cranberries. Some have argued that Haughton’s loyalty to local ingredients is undermined by his predilection for Mediterranean flavours, but when the food tastes this good, then frankly who cares?
