The Grill Room

The Grill Room features a hugely talented kitchen & impeccable front of house team, amid decor that's a 1980s take on classic Scottishness. Our pre-starter of sea bass on potato ahead of a fabulous starter of seared scallops on cauliflower mousseline promised much. But there is a tendency to over-elaborate elsewhere, perhaps in an effort to justify the prices. Short grill menu aside (rib or sirloin of beef, swordfish, lobster), typical mains include pork fillet with apple & mustard pudding or saffron-scented monkfish on lobster & vanilla risotto. Desserts, meanwhile, are architectural marvels. More discretion & greater simplicity across the menu would put the Grill Room in Edinburgh’s top rank, although that would also require better value on the pricey wine list.
