Square Meal review of Pan Am:
A trip to Liverpool’s popular Albert Dock is usually an excuse to dress up, have a few drinks & go WAG-spotting, but not necessarily to enjoy a good meal. Pan Am (formerly the Pan American Club) is a sign that this may be changing. The thriving five year-old bar has a rather fabulous dining room upstairs, complete with comfy banquettes, huge tables & exposed brick walls. Though the clubby vibe seeps upstairs thanks to a pop soundtrack, black-clad waiters & an impressive cocktail list, that doesn’t stop the kitchen aiming high. Most intriguing are the pot roasts for sharing, including braised lamb shanks or rack of lamb, served tableside in cast-iron casseroles. There are simple grills too – swordfish or sirloin steak, say – as well as fancier dishes such as lobster & strawberry salad or John Dory en papillote. Our only complaint was that four of the five dishes we ordered came with the same Jackson Pollock-esque squiggles of balsamic glaze.
