A little haven of French style & sophistication, Didier & Stephanie’s is exactly what it says on the label: Stephanie heads the front of house with calm charm, while Didier runs the kitchen. It’s a peaceful, intimate setting, with palest yellow walls & lots of stripped wood. Didier demonstrates technical skill & artistic flair in all aspects of a meal, from homemade rolls to petits fours. The menu ploughs a classic furrow, but often has a modern edge: mains range from confit of duck leg with red port & shallots to monkfish poached in curry stock with a ginger emulsion. Even the most ordinary-sounding dishes, such as the ubiquitous goats' cheese starter, are elevated to new heights, the cheese encased in crisp pastry & sweet slivers of red pepper, & served on a bed of impeccably dressed leaves. Desserts such as poached pear with raspberry sorbet & honey display a masterful run of flavours, further proof that Didier understands taste just as well as he understands presentation.
