Square Meal Review of The Green Man ?

The Green Man is worth noting as it is just a 10-minute drive from Stansted Airport. Some original, 15th-century details have been retained in the bar area, but there’s smart, contemporary styling to the Sea Witch restaurant. Raw materials are locally sourced where possible, with dishes ranging from potted shrimps to duck breast steeped in camomile tea & served with pak choy & & orange glaze. An eclectic wine list features offerings from both Old & New World, & friendly staff foster a cheerful ambience.

We visited this restaurant with friends who are regular visitors and they wanted to share this little gem with us – and we were not let down.

A lovely ambience which must in the summer be enhanced by the fabulous lawns makes it very welcoming. The choice in the menus gave me a chance to enjoy the Tempura King Prawns and my wife the scallops. My wife staying with the fish thoroughly enjoyed the Mixed Fish Grill whilst the Steak, Oyster and Guinness Pie filled me totally. The desert menu was was very enticing and all this was washed down with very reasonably priced but good wines.

The staff were so friendly and I can only say that if you live nearby or are in the area then go – but book to be on the safe side as it was pretty well full when we were there!

The Green Man is a real find especially for seafood lovers. It is a lovely restaurant well laid out with decent space between tables so you don't feel cramped. In summer weather a table on the terrace is a treat! Food is delicious and served beautifully by friendly waitresses. Love the fact that every table gets a jug of iced water without asking and that they do decent non-alcoholic beer (Becks Blue) for those of us who drive!. Crisp white linen, sparkling glasses and shiny cutlery make the restaurant feel a lot more expensive than it is when you get the bill. Main courses are around the £15 mark – nearer £20 when you add a side dish or two. I've never seen quite such chunky golden crispy chips – not like some places where they have never seen a potato. The deserts are to die for – but they are big portions so make sure you save space. Well worth the drive

I have been here a lot and recently they have changed the menu (again) and are now operating ‘The Sea Witch’ Restaurant.

While the food and service are good for a 3 course meal for two with a couple of drinks (no bottle and no coffees) you are looking at £60 plus

Their was a lunchtime menu which offerred cheaper alternatives which seems to have disappeared. This was very good value and you were looking at a range of £30/35 for two which is sustainable. It is a very smart venue but is out of the way and will need to offer cheaper alternatives if it is to survive in this current climate.

That said, food & presentation very good and pleasant staff
