Square Meal Review of Oran Mor ?

A former church, Oran Mor opened for business in its current guise in 2004. Since then it has built a solid reputation as a cultural/arts centre, although it also has a restaurant & a notable whisky bar with a traditional ‘island’ counter, wooden fixtures, bare stone & various artworks around the walls. The food is good enough to attract people who are fans of neither whisky nor drama, while there are a couple of real ales for the beer monsters – sold under the Oran Mor name but made by the Kelburn & Houston breweries (both near Glasgow). As for the celebrated whisky list, it has well over 200 choices including premium names such as a fine 30-year-old Highland Park from Orkney & a gorgeous 25-year-old Talisker from Skye – although you will pay top whack for those.

Visited at Sunday lunchtime during our first time in Glasgow this weekend (October 2010). This place was recommended and the photo of the church building sparked our interest. Location is lovely and we were sorry we hadn't spent more time in the West End over the weekend. Drinks fine (the usual), food very tasty (I'm a chef so quite fussy!!) and everything clearly freshly made although we would have liked a Sunday lunch option but that was just us! Service very friendly although it did look like a few new young staff had yet to be trained fully and didn't know the ropes yet. The interior is a lovely light building, buckets of character, with lots of alcoves including comfy couches where we sat with our food, drinks and the complementary Sunday newspapers quite happily without being rushed out the door. Would definitely recommend it!
