Square Meal review of Halcyon:
There are lots of reasons to visit Peebles: it's attractive, close to Edinburgh, surrounded by rolling Borders hills, & the River Tweed runs through the middle. Since spring 2004, however, it has also boasted a crisp & personable restaurant – Halcyon. You'll find Ally McGrath, the young co-proprietor, in the kitchen & space for around 20 diners in the first-floor dining room. The bargain table d'hote evening menu (three courses for £15.00, Tuesdays to Thursdays) could see three courses such as home-cured salmon with yuzu dressing, wasabi & cucumber to start, boiled salt beef with mashed potatoes, creamed spinach & horseradish as a main, & vanilla creme brulee with confit pineapple for dessert. A la carte choices include a brilliant cauliflower soup starter (with truffle oil), or fillet of coley with crushed peas, a tower of chips, & cheeky HP Sauce gravy as a main. A quick lunch option might be bacon & cheeseburger on rosemary focaccia, & the short wine list has enthusiastic tasting notes.
