Square Meal review of Haldanes:
Under the steady hand of George Kelso, Haldanes has built a reputation as one of Edinburgh’s best Franco-Scottish restaurants since it opened in Albany Street in 1997. In early 2006 they moved. The new Dundas Street premises have a lounge bar just below street level, while a further flight of stairs leads to a refurbished cellar with nooks & crannies for dining. Plain stone walls add a traditional feel but despite the change of address Kelso has stuck to his trademark approach. That could see a tian of Shetland crab & avocado with mango salsa to start, panache of monkfish, mussels & crayfish with lashings of saffron & chive butter sauce as a main, & lemon tart with sorbet in a brandy basket for dessert. There's also a short, simple menu that doubles up for lunch & pre-theatre, while the lounge bar runs its own daytime offering – convenient for a decent ciabatta, a platter of cheese or smoked salmon, & a glass of wine.
