Square Meal Review of Allium ?

Set at the corner of the market square in an archetypal Cotswold town, James & Erica Graham’s restaurant is housed in a couple of old stone cottages decorated with a surprising degree of warmth. But it’s the modern British cooking that really stands out. James is a gutsy chef who knows all about bold flavours & revels in seasonal produce from land & sea. Cuttlefish might be teamed with lemon & Israeli couscous, flavoursome breast of grouse is accompanied by bubble & squeak, & desserts finish things on a high note: don’t miss the exquisite sweet/savoury tones of beetroot soufflé with sage ice cream. Erica Graham’s gracious service, wonderful breads, a serious cheese plate & a wine list that invariably provides the right bottle, make this place memorable.

The restaurant has just been refurbished and now has a modern and unique feel. The welcome into the restaurant was warm and genuine and the service throughout remained excellent and informative, from advice with the wine choice through to the origins of the food. The food itself still has a fellow dinner talking about it incessantly as the combination of taste and innovation would have anyone amazed. The skate on ice consists of perfectly cooked skate on what appears to be a frozen surface which when broken allows the sauce to infuse the fish and is a masterpiece of food design and the salmon was the finest taste and texture we had encountered anywhere. Their secret appears to be real attention to detail from the origin of the food to the delivery on the plate. This is definitely a fine dinning restaurant and not to be compared to a good pub meal.

Very disappointing. No atmosphere, awful lighting but above all appauling service bordering on the rude. The food remains good but sadly a restaurant in decline

I agree with the write up. We have eaten there as a couple and in large groups. Food is astoundingly good and very creative, all with local produce. Apparently the chef even goes hunting for some dishes himself. The cheese is amazing, great wine list and lovely discreet and not pretentious service. All in all a real treat.
